Water smarter, not just more. The instinct when plants look stressed is to water more. But in heavy desert heat, the real issue is often when you’re watering, not how much.
â Water between 4 AM and 7 AM to reduce evaporation and allow roots to absorb moisture before the heat sets in
â Deep, infrequent watering encourages deeper root growth and drought resilience
â Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the root zone and dramatically reduces waste â essential for desert-adapted plants
Natural grass vs. synthetic turf:
â If you have natural grass, raise your mower height slightly to reduce scorching and water stress
â Synthetic turf holds heat during peak hours â if you have pets or kids, plan your outdoor time for early morning or after sunset
Watch for stress signs. Curling leaves, yellowing edges, or mid-summer leaf drop can indicate heat stress, underwatering, or irrigation issues. A quick audit of your drip lines and emitters is one of the easiest things you can do to protect your landscape investment.

ð§ïļ Monsoon Prep: What Every Valley Homeowner Should Do Before August
The official monsoon season runs June 15 through September 30 â but the real action happens in July and August, when the most intense storms, haboobs, and flash flooding events occur. August is typically the single wettest month in Phoenix. Don’t wait until a storm is on the radar. Here’s what to address now:
Drainage & Grading Walk your yard after a heavy irrigation cycle and look for low spots where water pools. Poor drainage is the most common source of monsoon damage â water collecting against your foundation or turning your decomposed granite into a mudslide. If you’ve had standing water issues before, now is the time to address grading or add a French drain.
Tree & Plant Trimming Overgrown trees become wind sails in monsoon storms. Thinning the canopy before storm season reduces wind resistance and lowers the risk of limb damage. Check for dead branches, unstable limbs, and any tree that’s been leaning â those are the first to go in a strong dust storm.
Hardscape & Structure Check Inspect your retaining walls, paver patios, and raised garden beds for cracks or instability. Monsoon rains can undermine loose base material and shift pavers. Catching small issues now is far less expensive than addressing them after a storm.
Irrigation System Review Monsoon storms can be intense but brief â don’t assume your plants are getting enough water just because it rained. Make sure your smart controller is calibrated to pause for rain and resume when soil moisture drops. If you have a standard timer, a rain sensor is an inexpensive upgrade worth making before July.
Lighting & Electrical If you have outdoor landscape lighting, check that junction boxes and connections are sealed and protected from water intrusion. Ground-level fixtures are particularly vulnerable to flooding and debris â a quick walk-through now can prevent a costly repair after the first big storm.
